IIM SAM
IIMSAM (Intergovernmental Institution for the Use of Micro-Algae Spirulina Against Malnutrition) is a treaty-based intergovernmental organization (IGO) dedicated to promoting the use of Spirulina Platensis, a nutrient-rich microalga, to combat hunger and malnutrition globally. IIMSAM was granted Observer Status to United Nations ECOSOC under Decision 2003/212, adopted on 5 March 2003.
Background and Legal Status
IIMSAM was established under an international treaty titled "Free Agreement for Cooperation in Scientific Research and Humanitarian Use of Micro-Alga Spirulina as Food." As an intergovernmental organization, it operates within international legal frameworks and holds diplomatic privileges.
The organization's work was recognized in the United Nations General Assembly Draft Resolution A/C.2/60/L.14/Rev.1 (2005), titled "The Use of Spirulina to Combat Hunger and Malnutrition and Help Achieve Sustainable Development", supported by multiple UN Member States.
Mandate and Objectives
IIMSAM promotes Spirulina as a sustainable and affordable solution to malnutrition. Its core goals include:

In March 2003, ECOSOC adopted Decision 2003/212 granting IIMSAM official Observer Status. This allows IIMSAM to contribute to UN efforts in nutrition, health, and development.
